Alan Shearer reveals who Man Utd should sign after Matheus Cunha (2025)

Alan Shearer has urged Manchester United to complete a ‘bargain’ transfer after wrapping up a deal for Matheus Cunha.

United are expected to bring Brazilian playmaker Cunha to Old Trafford this summer.

Cunha, who has a release clause of £62.5m, signed a new deal with Wolves in January but did so knowing he would be put up for sale in the summer.

The 25-year-old’s form at Molineux has attracted interest from Arsenal and Chelsea but Manchester United are leading the transfer race after opening talks earlier this month.

Shearer insists Cunha has the ‘talent’ to thrive at Old Trafford but says his signing ‘won’t make a difference’ unless further additions arrive at the Manchester giants this summer.

The ex-England striker believes Ruben Amorim needs ‘six or seven’ new signings and says United should look to secure a deal for Liam Delap.

Delap has enjoyed an impressive season despite Ipswich Town’s struggles in the Premier League and can be signed for £30m this summer.

The reasonable buy-out clause has alerted Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea to the possibility of a summer deal.

‘Matheus Cunha has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford, but wouldn’t make a difference for Man United – they’re going to need another six or seven players on top of that,’ Shearer told Betfair.

‘He’s just one of the players, if it is going to happen, but yeah I get it and I understand it.

‘The reason why he signed a contract extension at Wolves was so that they could get rid of the release clause to get some decent money for him. United are going to need more than him, but he’ll be a welcome addition, absolutely.

‘I don’t know what they’re going to have to pay for him. I suspect it’s quite a hefty amount. Has he got talent? Absolutely. Is he a bit of a maverick? Yeah, but you get that with most good players – they have an edge to them and a side which some people may not like.

‘You have to get around that and manage it in different ways and you look at the very best ever players at United, Eric Cantona, or George Best – I’m not comparing but most top players have something about them.

‘I was the same – I got into one or two fights in my career, but that’s what happens. You’ve got to have an edge to you.

‘United are missing so much in every position – we could talk all day about what’s gone wrong this season in those positions for them.

‘They have also been linked with Liam Delap. But one or the other? They need to sign both.

‘They need a top-class centre-forward like Delap, but they need someone like Cunha as well. They need players defensively as well – all around the pitch they need reinforcements.

‘Whether they can go out and spend that much, I don’t know. I suspect that may depend whether they get into the Champions League or not.

‘I’ve read that there’s about a £30m release clause for Liam Delap, which means that someone is going to get a real bargain in that. It isn’t a lot of money for a centre-forward with big potential, like he has.

‘He’ll have tons of options, Delap will. When you look at all the clubs who need a centre-forward in the Premier League – Arsenal, Chelsea, Man United, Liverpool, Spurs – there’ll be huge clubs all looking at Delap.

‘There’s no doubt, if it is that amount of money, then he will have big options.’

Manchester United are just 14th in the Premier League with five games remaining.

Amorim’s side can, however, salvage a dismal campaign by winning the Europa League ahead of a semi-final tie with Athletic Bilbao.
